Spelling

The goal of spelling instruction at Estabrook School is for students to know when they don't know how to spell a word (or recognize a misspelled word) and be able to do something about it.  Students are held accountable for "doing everything they know how to do as writers" in their everyday writing, including spelling.

Children are responsible for correctly spelling the "Priority Words" that they use in their everyday writing. The Priority Words, also known as "No Excuse Words", are the most frequently used writing words. All students have their own copies of the Priority Word List and they are expected to check the spelling of these words in all of their everyday writing. Time for proofreading is always provided. We routinely take samples of their writing (without prior announcement) to determine their ability to meet this standard. We feel that this holds children accountable for their everyday spelling and helps them become more responsible for their writing.
