Science

An important focus of our professional development has been teaching inquiry science. We learned ways of encouraging children to direct their own science inquiry. One of the important science process skills is communication, and science notebooks will be used to support science and literary skills.

Our life science unit is Food Chains. We want our students to recognize the relationship between organisms in a food chain, and that some creatures can become endangered if their food sources change as their habitats are disturbed, such as the panda.
The physical science unit is Chemical Testing, where the children learn through investigation that chemicals undergo changes when they're mixed together, separated or heated.

Our earth science unit covers the Water Cycle. The children become familiar with concepts such as condensation, evaporation and precipitation. They measure properties of weather using various weather instruments.

The skills that we stress in all of these units include: recording, observing, experimenting, and communicating.
