Mathematics
The core of our
mathematics curriculum is the Everyday Math Program, used in all of
the Lexington elementary schools. It is in compliance with the
Massachusetts Frameworks, dealing with number sense, patterns,
functions and relations, geometry, measurement, and probabilities.
Everyday Math is supplemented in our classrooms by materials and
programs designed to provide both reinforcement and extension of the
concepts presented.
Our curriculum encourages children to problem solve for themselves, in
creative, age appropriate, and mathematically correct ways. We want
them to share their thinking, and become aware of math in their daily
lives.
Some of the approaches we use in the teaching of mathematics may
differ from the way adults have been taught, so we encourage you to
listen to your child's explanations, and when in doubt, refer to the
Parent Letter which is sent home at the beginning of each new unit of
instruction. And, as always, send in a note if clarification is
needed.
